10 tips to avoid insanity while house hunting
Months of dedicated house hunting can really get to you if you let it........
- Don't think it's the end of the world if you miss out on a place you like. There'll be another one.
- Give yourself a break! The process is stressful enough without you forgetting what it's like to have a life.
- Keep up the communication with anyone involved in the purchase. (Friends, family etc.) Your needs or wants may change as you get further down the track.
- But don't bore your mates with house talk. Debating the merits of fixed versus floating mortgages can, in some circles, be considered dull. Don't forget to pepper conversations with questions about them. (You know, like you used to before you got completely obsessed with house hunting!)
- Stick to your budget. Dont even think about stretching things out until you can be sure you can afford the repayments.
- Be patient. This is a huge decision and as much as you might like them to, things won't happen overnight.
- Go to lots of open homes but be economical with your time. Once you've been to a few you'll quickley be able to assess whether a house is what you're looking for.
- Talk to all parties involved in the home buying process. (Real estate agents, builders, enginerrs, etc.) The more informed you are the more comfortable you'll be with what's involved.
- When you've found a house you're interested in, don't be rushed or pressured. You need to ensure you're completely comfortable that you're checked everything you need to.
- Be prepared to compromise. There is no such thing as 'the perfect home'. The sooner you realise this the less heartache you have in store.
